Some Last Supper images show only 11 apostles because Judas Iscariot is believed to have left before the meal’s most sacred moment, so artists sometimes excluded him. In other works, Judas is intentionally separated or obscured to symbolize his betrayal, which can make the scene appear to have one fewer apostle.

Breaking bread at the Last Supper symbolized Jesus sharing his body with his disciples. It represented unity and fellowship among them. It also established the foundation for the Christian practice of Communion.

The Last Supper is significant because it shows Jesus establishing the Eucharist, which is central to Christian worship. It also represents themes of sacrifice, service, and the new covenant between God and humanity.
